In our last two blogs we have explained how pairing Energy data with information from a Building Management System (BMS) can improve your building’s energy efficiency. In our next series of blogs we will take a closer look at Synapsys’ very own solution: SIPinsight Energy Building Information Software (EBIS) and how it can provide visibility which is key to effective energy management
Not so long ago many businesses considered their ‘green’ credentials to be secondary to running a business. For some business owners it was even considered detrimental, but for others being environmentally friendly was something they could use to attract more environmentally conscious customers. Now it can offer more than that – it can be good for your business’ bottom line too.
The first steps in improving a building’s energy efficiency are of course behavioural changes, such as getting people to turn down the thermostat, or remembering to turn off the light when you leave an empty room. But we are human, we can be forgetful, meaning these changes can be slow and difficult to enforce.
Thanks to modern technology we have come on leaps and bounds and building automation means we can control a building’s heating, ventilation, lighting and other systems automatically, thus reducing the problem of ‘human error’ in the effort to improve our energy efficiency. A BMS offers us real time control of a building’s plant and once programmed will run through the control cycle with alarming efficiency. But by leaving a BMS to just carry on and do its job you are not using it to its full potential.
To effectively and sustainably reduce energy costs, businesses need to monitor and understand their usage. It is difficult to monitor something you cannot see, and for truly effective energy management visibility is key. SIPinsight EBIS provides this visibility. EBIS processes the data acquired from the BMS and presents it in a format that is easy to understand. The building manager can easily read the information and use it to implement a detailed energy reduction plan.
Perhaps it’s time you discovered why visibility is the key to effective energy management.
